Case of Climbing Lotte Tower: Unusual Incident in Korea

August 12, 2023

This case involved a client whose actions were reported in the media as an unusual incident in Korea.

The client attempted to climb Lotte Tower, the tallest building in Korea, equipped with a parachute and climbing gear, which led to an investigation for charges of trespassing and obstruction of business.

Simon argued on legal grounds that climbing the building’s exterior does not constitute trespassing.

Additionally, he contended that there was no damage to the victims, the incident actually increased public awareness of the building, and there were no injuries involved. Thus, he argued for the lightest possible penalty.

Initially, the prosecutor intended to formally indict the case in court, but after considering Simon’s arguments, the case was processed through a summary indictment. As a result, the client was able to settle the matter by paying only a 5 million KRW fine.
